Adaptations are when a medium or channel is changed to be expressed in another medium or channel. Usually, this refers to when a book is made into a movie, but the term also applies to radio to TV, online content to print, and many other medium-to-medium changes.

Many times, adaptations are made for publicity purposes. Companies pay big money for ad space during the film and for promotional material such as posters and trailers.

You will often see product placement in adaptations as well. For example, a company that manufactures coffee may pay to have their brand placed in the movie as the coffee that the main character drinks every day .

Netflix has some great book to movie adaptations available for viewing on their platform. These range from classic novels such as Pride and Prejudice and Little Women to contemporary novels such as To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and Girl In The Window.

The Girl on the Train

If you have not read the novel The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, then you should not watch the movie adaptation. Even though the movie was very well done, it is said that it spoils most of the story.

The Girl on the Train is one of the most popular books of our time. It has been read by many audiences and has received great praise . It is a thriller that keeps readers on their toes and guessing until the end.

Since it has such popularity, there was going to be a movie adaptation no matter what. The question was: who would direct it, and who would play which character?

The film was directed by famed director Tate Taylor, best known for his work in Get On Up, The Help, and Butter. He did an excellent job of bringing his vision to life while also sticking to what we know of the characters from the book.

Reese Witherspoon, Emily Blunt, and Justin Theroux play Rachel Watson, Anna Kendrick, and Tom Jawkins respectively.

13 Reasons Why

If you have not heard of or watched this show, you should definitely do so. 13 Reasons Why is a show about a young girl who commits suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes explaining why she did it and who is responsible.

The story follows her friend who receives the tapes and discovers the reasons and people involved. The main theme of this show is to speak up about your problems and don’t be silent about them.

It brings into light many issues such as depression, sexual assault, and bullying. The way it portrays these issues is very well done and realistic. Many people who have gone through similar things have said it really spoke to them which is why it received such great feedback.

The only criticism it has received is that it may have been too graphic at times which may have triggered some people with mental health issues , but other than that, it was a great show! If you have time to binge watch this one, I would definitely recommend it.

True Memoirs of an International Assassin

If you are looking for a slightly more serious take on the whole assassin genre , then check out True Memoirs of an International Assassin. This is also a pretty new movie , coming out in 2018, so it is not old or outdated.

The main character, called Bullseye, is tasked with killing the world’s greatest hitman. He soon realizes that this mission is harder than he anticipated and that his target may not be who he thinks he is.

As with most movies of this genre, there are some predictable elements. However, overall, viewers found this movie to be pretty entertaining and enjoyable. Many gave it good reviews and said it was one of the better assassin movies that came out in 2018.

Death Note

If you’re a fan of Japanese anime or manga, then you’re probably very familiar with the genre. Many popular anime series are set in either the fantasy or sci-fi/future genres, which makes for some interesting story adaptations .

Some of the most popular anime series include : Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, My Hero Academia, and Attack on Titan. Many of these series have aired on television channels like Cartoon Network and Now TV in the U.K., so if you are looking for some new entertainment, try checking some of these out!

Netflix has a wide variety of anime and manga adaptations available to stream. Some other popular ones are: Violet Evergarden, Tokyo Ghoul, and A Series of Unfortunate Events.

The Kissing Booth

There are some book to movie adaptations that get quite a bit of attention even before being released. Such is the case with The Kissing Booth, which just came out on Netflix this past weekend.

This story has quite the background, starting as a Wattpad story titled Sealing Our Fate by author Zoe Harris. The story was a fan fiction based on the TV show 90210.

Harris eventually took down the fan fiction and rewrote it as her own original story, changing all the names except for Laranne. This is what screenwriter Jessica Holland apparently used as her source material when she was hired to write the screenplay.

Many people caught onto the film being a re-write since some parts did not match up with the original plot and characters, but it was still an entertaining movie! If you have some free time, check it out.

Our Planet

Recent releases have put a lot of focus on environmental awareness, and none more so than the documentary Our Planet. This film is a nature documentary that showcases some of the most beautiful places on earth and the wildlife that inhabit them.

Filmmakers traveled to every continent to gather footage for this film, and they worked very hard to avoid any kind of pollution during filming.

They tried very hard to not disrupt the animals or their habitats while filming, which is why most of the footage is limited to short periods of time.

The goal was also to capture as much as they could in a short amount of time so that they could not overwork any one species or population.

This film was put out by Netflix as its first original documentary , making it free for anyone with a subscription to watch.

Dumplin’

A recent book to movie adaptation on Netflix is Dumplin’. This novel was written by Julie Murphy and published in 2016. The book is a contemporary young adult novel that follows the story of Willowdean Dickson, nicknamed Willa.

Willa has to deal with relationships with her mother, her best friend, and a new guy that enters her life. Along with this, she has to decide whether or not to enter a beauty pageant where her mother is the former Miss Texas.

The story takes place in the small town of Pine Oak, Texas. Many of the characters have interesting names like Honey Hope, Dawn DiDuzzio, and Earl Evertion. These names are mentioned several times throughout the book as well as others like Bo Bixby and Big Ronnie.

This book is categorized as young adult but can be read by anyone due to its general content. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a light read or someone who is looking for something different than romance novels.

The Siege of Paris

In 2015, Netflix released a film called The Siege of Paris. It is a action movie that is based on a book with the same name. The book was written by Barry Reed and published in 2003.

The Siege of Paris is about a wealthy businessman who attempts to take over the city of Paris by organizing and financing a group of mercenaries. They are tasked with taking control of the city and holding it until an approaching army can arrive to take control.

The story line is very fast-paced, with little time spent on developing characters or romantic subplots. This makes it easy to watch the movie twice (or more!) without getting bored .

The best part about this movie? It is free to watch on Netflix! If you are looking for a good action movie to watch, I would recommend checking out The Siege of Paris.
